How to make a free digital business card
Make a free digital business card step by step: what to fill in, how it goes online, how people save your contact, and how to print its QR code.
To make a free digital business card, type your name and contact details into a card builder, pick a color and an address, then confirm your email with the code you receive: the card goes online. You get a link and a QR code; people scan the code, your card opens on their phone, and a Save contact button adds you to their contacts.
What do you need before you start?
Very little:
- your name, or your company's name
- a phone number or an email address (at least one of the two)
- an email inbox you can open now, to receive a sign-in code
- a photo, if you want one (it is optional)
Nothing to install. You can build the card on a phone or a computer, in the browser.
How do you make a digital business card, step by step?
Here is how it works on the vCardGen card builder. It has four steps, with a live preview of the card beside them (on a phone, a strip at the top that you can open).
- About you. Add your first and last name, your profession and, if you like, a title (such as Dr), a company and a short bio of up to 160 characters. Add a photo if you want: you can drag it to center your face and zoom.
- Contact. Fill in only the ways you want to be reached: phone, email, website, address, and Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook or TikTok. Each field you fill in becomes a row on the card; empty fields do not show. Tick "This number is also on WhatsApp" to add a WhatsApp row. An address opens directions in Maps.
- Style. Choose a color for the card, from the list or your own, and the card's address: the part after vcardgen.com/ that your QR code will carry. Use 3 to 40 letters, numbers and hyphens.
- Publish. Type your email. You get an 8-digit code, valid for 10 minutes; type it in and the card goes online. Until then the builder says "Not online yet", and your card stays in your browser.
The page then says "Your card is online", with its link, its QR code, and buttons to copy the link or share it.
Why does it ask for an email?
The email is your sign-in, and what lets you alone change the card later. There is no password: you get a code by email, and the first code you type creates your account. A sign-in lasts 30 days; after that, or on another device, you ask for a new code.
What does the person who scans see?
On an iPhone, they open the Camera app, point it at your QR code and tap the link that appears, as Apple's help page describes. Many Android phones read QR codes in the camera app too; on those that do not, Google Lens does.
Your card opens as a web page, with no app to install. It shows your photo, your name and a Save contact button, which downloads your contact file (with your photo, if the card has one); they open it to add you to their contacts. Each row does what it says: a tap calls you, opens a WhatsApp chat, writes an email, opens your website or your profile, or shows directions to your address.
Can you change the card after printing the QR code?
Yes. The QR code holds the card's address, not your details. When your number or job changes, you sign in, edit the card and press Save changes. The printed code stays the same and opens the new version.
The one thing you cannot change is the card's address, because printed codes carry it. Choose it with care: your name or your business name works well.

Card online or contact QR code: which one?
If you do not want an account or a page, a plain contact QR code is the other way. It holds your details inside the code itself, so the phone reads them without opening a page, and it needs no account. The vCard generator makes one, along with a contact file.
| Card online | Contact QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Sign-in by a code sent by email | None |
| Change details after printing | Yes, the code stays the same | No, make a new code |
| Photo | On the card page | Not in the code (the contact file can hold one) |
| Buttons to call, chat, get directions | Yes | No |
| Counts of scans and views | Yes, in your account | No |
| Works if the site is unreachable | No, it is a web page | Yes, the details are in the code |
How do you print the QR code?
Your account page shows the card's QR code. Download it as a PNG for a screen or a document, or as an SVG for large prints, where it stays sharp at any size.
The same page also makes a paper business card for you: 85 x 55 mm, with your name, your contact lines and the card's QR code. You can download it as a picture, or print a sheet of eight with cut marks.
Before you print:
- Leave the white margin around the code. Phones need it to find the code.
- Print a few words next to it, such as "Scan to save my contact".
- Scan your printed proof with two different phones before you order a large batch.
Can you see who scanned it?
You see numbers, not people. The account page counts QR scans, link views, contact saves and taps on each button, over the last 7, 30 or 90 days. It keeps nothing about the visitors themselves.
A short example
Alex Morgan is a wedding photographer. She fills in her name, her profession, a photo, her phone number (also on WhatsApp), her email, her website and her Instagram. She picks a dark green color and the address alex-morgan, types the code from her inbox, and her card is online at vcardgen.com/alex-morgan.
She prints the business card from her account page. A year later her website changes: she edits the card, and every printed code opens the card with the new link.
